Katy Perry Fans Call Her A Fraud Over Her Anti-Choice Vote

After speaking out in support of reproductive rights, the singer proudly voted for a mayoral candidate who opposes them.

Katy Perry fans are roaring on Twitter today after the singer and self-identified ally shared her decision to vote for an anti-choice candidate in today’s Los Angeles mayoral election, former Republican Rick Caruso.

Just hours after the singer shared a video in which she showed her support of reproductive freedom the singer seemingly did an about-face with an Instagram post showing her voting for Caruso.

KATY PERRY on Instagram: "🇺🇸I am voting for a myriad of reasons (see the news) but in particular because Los Angeles is a hot mess atm. #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok🇺🇸"

Her explanation for her, well, choice; “I am voting for a myriad of reasons (see the news) but in particular because Los Angeles is a hot mess atm. #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok” she wrote in the caption.

For those unfamiliar with Caruso, he’s a billionaire and a devout Catholic who, before running for Los Angeles mayor, was a registered Republican. He changed his party affiliation to Independent, then Democrat, in the lead-up to his bid.

While changing parties isn’t automatically problematic, the issue causing an uproar has to do with Caruso's record regarding reproductive rights as well as the timing with which he made the move. In a 2007 interview with LA Magazine, Caruso explained that he “opposes abortion in most cases but would support some stem cell research,” despite his representatives claiming that he “has always been pro-choice and has always supported Roe v Wade.”

Furthermore, Caruso’s record of donations seems to support that his feelings from 2007 haven’t evolved, as he has continued to help bankroll anti-choice candidates.

This is why fans are calling foul on Perry’s seeming hypocrisy.

“@katyperry you voted for an anti-choice republican and turned comments off so nobody could call you out on being a hypocrite”

“katy perry tweeting out a pro-choice video while voting for rick caruso would be objectively hilarious if it wasn’t painfully dumb.”

“@katyperry YOU VOTED FOR AN ANTI-ABORTION CANDIDATE”

“@katyperry Unfollowed. Music deleted. Disappointed I once paid for 4 tickets to see you in concert.”

“@katyperry for this guy? alright katy 🙄”

“@katyperry”
