Following the Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade last Friday, LGBTQ+ celebrities and allies have been stepping up and using their platforms to speak out and protest against the decision, which now makes access to reproductive health and abortion services up to the individual states to decide.
This ruling will have a widespread impact on both cisgender women and many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. As such, it’s no surprise that people were out in force over the weekend pushing back — including celebs who took to the street and stage, using the metaphorical megaphone that comes with their reach to let their voices be heard.
From concert shoutouts to in-person protests to song dedications and televised speeches, here are 11 LGBTQ+ celebrities and allies who aren’t staying silent on the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
“The song we’re about to do is one of the favorites that we’ve written. It’s about the concept of power and how we need to always remember how not to abuse it. Today is a really, really dark day for women in the U.S. I’m just going to say that as I cannot bear to think about it any longer in this moment.”
“I’m renouncing my citizenship. (…) There’s just too much stupid in the world to go back to that miserable excuse for a country. Oh, I’m not kidding. You’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”
“Be heartbroken. Be angry… There’s a lot of us here. This many people can move the needle on something like this.” Later, she said, “I don’t know about y’all but it’s doing my heart a lot of good just to be here you, and just to sing for you, and to laugh. We can cry, too. And I’m going to do a whole hell of a lot of screaming. But I’m going to save a bit of screaming, too. Because I believe that this can be undone, and will be undone.”
Halsey dedicated an entire section of a recent concert to explain the impact of overturning Roe v. Wade.
Fuller House actress Jodie Sweetin was slammed to the ground by law enforcement during an in-person protest.
“The temperature is unbearable until you face it. You want to know a secret, girls? Your bodies were destined to be controlled and objectified since before you were born. That horror is your birthright. Here’s another secret – you possess ancient strength, ancient wisdom. Wisdom that has propelled every woman who came before you. That wisdom is your birthright. I ask you today, make accessing that wisdom your life’s work, because everything depends on that. (…) F*ck the Supreme Court.”
“It’s hard to put into words how sad a day this is for me personally. For my teammates. For all of the people all there who this is going to affect. Pro-choice means you get to choose. Pro-choice allows other people to be pro-life if that’s what works for them. (…) Pro-life doesn’t allow anybody to make a choice.”
“Now, y’all know it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t take a second to call out these stupid men. I mean, god damn. What else you want? Texas [is] really embarrassing me right now. Y’all know that’s my home state.”
“So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this. This song goes out to the justices: Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you!”
“All these irrelevant old motherf*ckers trying to tell us what to do with our fucking bodies.”
