Yuri!!! on Ice has made it all the way to the 2018 Winter Olympics!
The beloved gay anime series follows Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki after he comes in last place in the final round of the world championships. Defeated, he contemplates giving up ice skating and settles into home life and skating for fun in his free time. But when a secret recording of Yuri imitating his idol Victor Nikiforov goes viral, Victor leaves his skating legacy behind to become Yuri's coach, and Yuri quickly realizes their relationship is more than platonic.
Choreographed by real figure skaters, the IRL skating community around the world fell in love with the series. So much so, that dozens of skaters have performed or recreated routines to the show's music and sequences. Japenese figure skaters Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara brought their own interpretation of the title song to the 2018 Winter Olympics.
As The Mary Sue pointed out, it's incredible to see the queer anime series represented at the Olympics "at the same time the event has a record number of out LGBTQ+ athletes (including the first publicly gay male figure skater)."
