San Francisco Holds Twilight March for Harvey Milk and George Moscone

Thirty years after gay rights leader Harvey Milk and the San Francisco's then Mayor George Moscone were gunned down by disgruntled former Supervisor Dan White, the city is holding a concert and a twilight march Nov. 28, to commemorate their deaths.

While the big-screen version of Milk’s life is being told in movie theaters throughout the country, in Gus Van Sant’s Milk, residents of the city he called home and where he became the first openly gay person elected to major office in the country as a San Francisco City Supervisor, will march in his honor.

A memorial concert on the steps of San Francisco City Hall begins at 4 p.m. followed by a twilight march to the place where Milk owned a camera store in the city’s Castro District, according to the Bay City News.

Slated to speak are Milk’s and Moscone’s friends and family. While the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, members of the Lesbian / Gay Chorus of San Francisco, the San Francisco Lesbian / Gay Freedom Band and the GLAM Youth Center, are also scheduled to appear, the Bay City News reported.

The timely event, which not only commemorates Milk’s and Moscone’s deaths -- they were killed in City Hall on Nov. 27, 1978 -- also coincides with renewed interest in Milk’s contributions to the LGBT community and to gay activism in general.

The Harvey Milk Democratic Club, the Alice B. Toklas Democratic Club, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee contributed to organizing the event.
