A Canadian lesbian who says she was the subject of antigay harassment by a foul-mouthed comedian in 2007 will have her day in court this week, reports the Advocate.
The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal hearing begins on Monday and according to the National Post, comedian Guy Earle of Ontario is alleged to have "discriminated" against Lorna Pardy by making disparaging comments about her during an evening of stand-up at a Vancouver restaurant three years ago.
The disputed incident will come to a head this week, in which Pardy is seeking $20,000 in damages over alleged sexual and antigay discrimination. Earle has tried to get the case dismissed and failed.
Pardy says Earle subjected her and her girlfriend to verbal heckling related to their appearance, gender and sexuality. According to reports, at the end of his stand-up act, Earle took the microphone and hatched a verbal attack on the two women.
According to Earle, he called Pardy a "fat, ugly lesbian," or similar words, and suggested that someone in the audience "shove a d--- in her mouth to shut her up."
Earle then says Pardy and her girlfriend threw two drinks at him.
"I'm required to testify in person but I won't be there," Earle said. "This whole thing has already cost me at least $20,000. I'm saying, 'Come on people, enough is enough. This is ridiculous. Get a grip.' "
The hearing is scheduled to last four days.
