Dwyane Wade & Gabrielle Union Continue to Slay the Parenting Game
Zaya Wade's red carpet debut was stunning AF!
In case you missed it, over the weekend, Zaya Wade made her red carpet debut at this year's Truth Awards, and with her superstar father and stepmother Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union by her side, it was another stunning moment that proved just how impactful being a supportive and accepting parent of an LGBTQ+ child can be.
The trio wore color-coordinating outfits (that some Twitter users pointed out actually represent the colors of the genderqueer flag), and to say it was an absolute slay would be the understatement of the century.
“All Zaya! WoW! Not bad for a 12 year old huh 😉”— DWade (@DWade) 1583723487
Now THIS is the kind of content we signed up for!
Since last year, Zaya has been the subject of many harsh, uncalled for, and extremely vocal transphobic attacks on social media, with trolls criticizing everything from the color of her nails to the kinds of clothes she wears that make her feel most like herself. Some of the hate directed at Zaya (and by association, Wade) even came from other celebrities of note, like rappers Young Thug and Boosie Badazz, the latter of which made extremely crass comments about transitioning. But despite the hatefulness from trolls, Wade and Union's support of Zaya has never wavered, and it's so inspiring to see just how much they love and adore Zaya for who she is, especially in a world that can still be so cruel to queer kids.
"We want [our kids] to be whoever they feel that they can be in this world," Wade said when asked about his love for Zaya in an interview on the All the Smoke podcast in 2019. "In our household, that’s all we talk about."
He continued:
"We talk about making sure our kids be seen by each of us. Me and my wife, we talk about making sure our kids understand the power in their voice."
A word of advice for all the parents out there who still struggle to fully accept and embrace their LGBTQ+ children: take a note out of Dwyane and Gabrielle's playbook! They're doing it right!!
