'We're a Totally Peaceful, Racist Group' Says Straight Pride Organizer
While other cities are certainly trying to gear up for their own ridiculous straight pride events, the Modesto Straight Pride debacle is turning out to be the drama that keeps on coming.
A city council meeting on Wednesday revealed what detractors of the event have been saying all along — that this is as much about “white pride” as it is about “straight pride” (read: racism and homophobia).
Don Grundmann, one of the main organizers of the event, appeared before city council to argue in favor of the group being granted a permit to host their event later this month.
Grundmann passionately put down people who voiced concerns that a straight pride rally would incite violence.
“We haven’t done anything,” he told the city council. “We’re a totally peaceful, racist group.”
Yep, that’s right. The man pushing for an event celebrating “heterosexuality” and “Western civilization” actually let it slip that the group is, at its core, totally racist.
“An out-of-town white supremest tried to throw a straight pride parade in Modesto and he let the truth slip in a city council meeting. You can't make this shit up 😂”— Quilton Turdtino (@Quilton Turdtino) 1565234455
He tried to backtrack as the room erupted into laughter at either the idiocy or audacity of the comment, but it was too late for that.
"We say we're here to defend all races," he stuttered. "All races and colors."
Uh huh.
The Straight Pride Coalition, run by Grundmann, has in no way hidden that it is interested in celebrating being white, claiming on its website that Caucasians make up “the biological majority of the historical developers and founders of Western Civilization.”
But previously, they have tried to claim they are neither racist nor homophobic. Mhmm.
Also in attendance at the meeting was Matthew Mason, the gay adopted son of Grundmann’s co-organizer, Mylinda Mason. The two have been estranged for years, over Matthew’s sexuality, and the publicity of this debacle has drawn their fraught relationship into the spotlight.
“I have personally heard her use hateful, harmful rhetoric when describing the LGBTQ+ community and non-Christian religious communities,” he said at the meeting. “Don Grundmann is a radical right-wing fascist from the Bay Area who is attempting to use Modesto as a launching ground for his political and cultural campaign of hate.”
Oh, and that woman seen laughing especially hard after Grundmann outed himself as a racist? That’s Matthew’s birth mother and Modesto City Council member, Kristi Ah You.
A decision hasn’t yet been reached as to whether this straight pride nonsense will be permitted in Modesto, but the back and forth has certainly revealed a lot about some of the people pushing so hard to make it happen.
