These New Yorkers Fought Loud Homophobia With Louder Saxophones
That's how you do it.
Go to any major city, any major event, and you’ll probably find some asshole hanging around with a megaphone or some cardboard signs protesting the gays. Doesn’t matter if there’s anything specifically gay going on, it’s just something these losers get off on in their spare time, of which they always seem to have plenty.
Last week, one of these self-righteous homophobes grabbed a microphone and plodded down to Union Square Park in New York City to share the fiery message of gay hell with anyone who would give him the time of day.
But a couple of students from The New School for Jazz were passing through at the time, and they weren’t interested in letting this dummy spew his hate.
In yet another great coincidence, Nico Heller, known around the city for capturing short videos of interesting New Yorkers, walked by not long after and snagged a video of the battle between music and hellfire.
The homophobic dude seems to get increasingly flustered at the negative attention he’s receiving, alongside the competing sounds of smooth jazz and a camera aimed right at him.
One of the saxophone students, Augie Bello, told Queerty what inspired them to take up their instruments to shut down this would-be preacher.
“What the video doesn’t show is what he said before we took out our saxophones,” Bello said. “He was saying all gays will burn in hell and that they will be in a ring of fire. So I looked at Julian [Roel] and he looked at me and we instantly at the exact same thought, to drown out the hate with our saxophones.”
There’s no place for homophobia anywhere, but if you try to pull this shit in a place like NYC, there’s sure to be plenty of people happening by who are ready to shut you down.
