If you've been following the news today, then you're probably aware that the Supreme Court is what's on a lot of LGBTQ+ activists minds. But why, you ask? Well, today is a very, very, very important day for LGBTQ+ rights, epecially concerning workplace discrimination.
The Supreme Court just heard cases about whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans discrimination on the basis of sex, also bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This obviously has huge implications for LGBTQ+ people all over the country who still have little to no legal protections when it comes to the workplace, and one of the most high-profile cases that was heard at SCOTUS today involved a transgender woman named Aimee Stephens, who was fired after she told her employer that she was trans.
A lot is riding on the arguments that were heard today, and as a result, people on the internet quickly got the #RiseUpOct8 hashtag trending to raise awareness.
