These Tone-Deaf Handmaid's Tale Wedding Pics Are Pissing People Off
Talk about tone-deaf...
A couple's wedding photo has gone viral, but perhaps for the worst reasons. Surrounded by the red-hooded handmaidens from Hulu's dystopian series The Handmaid's Tale, the Candian newlyweds and photographer brand Van Daele & Russell are getting roasted online for the photos being "in bad taste" and "so f**king incredibly tone-deaf."
"Praise be! Kendra & Torsten are married!" the caption reads. "As fans of the show, it only seemed fitting for there to be some Handmaids in K&T’s wedding photos along the ‘hanging wall’ in Mill Race Park!" followed by a laughing emoji.
Handmaiden's in the series are basically slaves used by elite families to bear their children and do household chores. The hanging wall is where handmaidens are lynched if they rebel. The photo has gone viral on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for being all-around just tacky.
"Just absolutely stunned right now," said one comment.
"Wow, this is deeply disturbing. 'Praise be'? Seriously? I love the show, but this photo is truly puke-worthy," reads another.
Eventually, the photographers behind Van Daele & Russell responded to the backlash. Signed S&C, the don't exactly apologize but take credit for starting a conversation. The two self-identify as "gender traitors," which is a term in the show used to refer to gay people, and go on to say that they are "no strangers to many of the subplots of oppression, violence, and inequality that run through Margaret’s brilliant work."
"We didn’t expect the photo to go viral, but we are SOOO HAPPY IT HAS because hopefully, it will wake people up to how they too contribute to the oppression and hatred that they’re rightfully worked up over," they said. "Mission: accomplished! Everyone is talking about this issue now, rather than binging on a television series and then not doing ANYTHING about what they’re SO worked up over until the next season comes out in the spring."
Needless to say, the internet is roasting them.
