The VP's remarks came after his wife was criticized for taking a job at a school that bans LGBTQ students and staff.

Vice President Mike Pence is offended that people are offended that the school his wife teaches at discriminates against LGBTQ students and staff.

Karen Pence accepted a part-time job teaching art at Immanuel Christian School, a place where she had worked previously and where one of their daughters attended in the past.

After the news broke, the school, and by association, the Pences, came under scrutiny due to the school’s open policy of requiring students, parents, and prospective staff to agree to refrain from participating in or condoning various “immoral” behaviors, including homosexuality, “transgender identity,” or “any other violation of the unique roles of male and female.”

VP Pence has a long history of working against the LGBTQ community, so while this latest slight is unfortunate, it’s also not surprising.

It’s also not surprising that he thinks Americans should be tolerant of his family’s intolerance.

“I have to tell you, to see major news organizations attacking Christian education, is deeply offensive to us,” he told Eternal Word Television News. “We have a rich tradition in America of Christian education and, frankly, religious education broadly defined. We celebrate it.

"The freedom of religion is enshrined in the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution prohibits a religious test for holding a public office and so we’ll let the other critics roll off our back, but this criticism of Christian education in America should stop.”

The idea that a cornerstone of “Christian education” is suppressing and dismissing millions of Americans as immoral based on who they love is certainly an interesting stance to take. Particularly as we live in an age with a growing number of Christian churches deciding to be accepting and affirming of the LGBTQ community.

Pence and his wife also made a surprise appearance at the March for Life rally in DC yesterday, an event protesting abortion rights.

He urged the attendees to “stand with that love and compassion as you stand for life. And know that we will stand with you until that great day comes where we restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law.”

So to clarify, United States law protects his ability to discriminate against the LGBTQ community because of religious freedom, and that’s sacred, but the law that protects women’s rights to their own bodies is definitely up for debate.

But we all know by now that Pence’s “love and compassion” doesn’t extend to babies that grow up to be gay teenagers. Send them to public school. Oh, and make sure other kids and teachers are allowed to discriminate against them while they’re there.

Freedom!
