For the first time, Parents magazine put a gay couple on its cover. And conservatives are freaking out.
Parents has been in publication for over 90 years, and has printed around 1000 issues during that time. Generally, they feature photos of families or children on the covers — sometimes one parent, sometimes two, but never before have they featured a family unit with two dads or two moms before. Until now.
Shaun T. Fitness, a professional fitness trainer, and his husband, Scott Blokker, are front and center on the February cover of the popular magazine, along with their two young children. The issue features an article about their surrogacy attempts and their home life now that their twins have arrived.
Of course, the idea of showing a same-sex marriage and family as positive and normal has thrown the conservatives into a tizzy.
One Million Moms has released a statement condemning Parents for “using its magazine as a platform to promote the pro-homosexual lifestyle.”
“Even if families do not personally subscribe to the publication, they should be warned that it could be displayed in waiting rooms of dentist and doctor offices, where children could easily be subjected to the glorification of same-sex parents.”
Oh, no! Not dentist and doctor offices! Our children are thoroughly protected from ever running into gays there!
The group continues to push their own pro-intolerance lifestyle by nudging anyone reading to cancel their subscription to Parents.
“After all,” they say, smugness practically radiating off the screen, “most conservatives and Christian families will disagree morally with the magazine’s decision, and subsequently, will not want to support its content.”
It’s important to remind you that good Christians SHOULD be offended by gays, after all, just in case you were considering not being offended by something so non-offensive.
With a staggering but unsurprising lack of self-awareness, the post concludes: “Rather than focusing on parenting tips, the publication shames Americans into embracing such a lifestyle.”
Here’s a parenting tip for you. “Your kid might grow up to be gay and there’s nothing you can do to stop it, so maybe don’t teach them to hate gay people.”
