Upon arriving at the House of Representatives, Jennifer Wexton, Virginia's newest congresswoman for the state's 10th district, hung up Capitol Hill's first transgender pride flag.
"The flag is there because of you and for you," announced Jennifer Wexton. "Change is here!"
“The trans flag is proudly & openly displayed next to the Virginia flag outside @RepWexton’s new office! She said to me, “Did you see the flag?! I think we’re the only office on the Hill with one.” To all her volunteers: the flag is there because of you & for you! Change is here!”— Narissa Rahaman (@Narissa Rahaman) 1546538352
Wexton, an aunt to a transgender child, has been vocally pro-LGBTQ in her political career. The Washingtonian reports that while serving as a Virginia senator, Wexton has helped pass legislation to protect gay and trans people from housing and employment discrimination. She's excited to keep the progressive train moving forward with this new position.
"This is personal for me," Wexton tweeted. "We're talking about my family and friends. I want everyone in the trans community to know that they are welcome and loved even in the face of this administration’s attacks."
Thank you for your advocacy, Congresswoman Wexton!
