Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has approved a new design for Canadian currency. A dollar coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in the country will begin circulation sometime in 2019.
Not much is known about the coin just yet. The Royal Canadian Mint is withholding a picture of the design or the name of the artist so as to “maximize the impact of the official launch,” according to the CBC.
Trudeau previously passed a law that would allow the records of people previously convicted of the now erroneous crime of “homosexual acts” to be expunged.
Of course, some Canadian conservatives are offended and are considering Trudeau’s attempts to make amends, particularly by celebrating the decriminalization anniversary, to be “indoctrination.”
“This is state-operated propaganda, pure and simple, using our money system,” Jack Fonseca of Campaign Life Coalition told The Daily Caller. “It’s Orwellian. Something you’d expect from a dictatorship like Communist China, the former Soviet Union, or the almighty German state in the 1930’s and 1940’s who used the apparatus of government to ensure that no citizen escapes indoctrination with the State’s ideology.”
However, as much as conservatives enjoy pretending groups they don’t like gaining rights or being celebrated somehow steps on their own rights, it’s unlikely the coin will generate much pushback. Especially considering how unoffensive the description of it we do have is.
The coin will be a “stylized rendering of two overlapping human faces within a large circle, the left half of the left face in front view and the right face in profile facing left, the two faces forming one whole face in front view composed of two eyes with eyebrows, a nose, a mouth and two ears with a small hoop earring on the left ear.”
It will also feature the word “equality” on display.
Not quite what most would consider “Orewellian.”
Bring on the gay money, Canada! May it increase the value of your dollar appropriately.
