Buffy’s Back: Sarah Michelle Gellar on ‘Ringer’, 'BTVS' Fans, and Kissing Selma Blair

SMG talks 'Ringer,' her commitment to playing strong female characters, her love for Buffy fans, and her fond memories of making out with Selma Blair (“a great kisser,” SMG confirms).

Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to TV this fall with an all new thrilling series, Ringer, where she plays not one, but two juicy roles as secretive twins, Bridget and Siobhan.

Gellar spoke to OUT magazine and was every bit as witty and wonderful as BTVS fans know her to be. She covers everything from her commitment to playing strong, unusual female characters, to her love for the still-devoted Buffy fans, to her fond memories of making out with Selma Blair (“a great kisser,” SMG confirms) on camera.

She even teases the tantalizing possibility of a lesbian twist in her new series, Ringer!

Here are a few of the best bits from her fabulous OUT interview:

Looking at Buffy and The Grudge and now Ringer, how do you describe the genre of work you’ve selected?
I don’t is actually the answer. I hate that everyone in this business wants to fit into a neat category. I go for whatever seems like something I would enjoy or will be different. With Buffy, you could call it sci-fi or horror or comedy or drama, but it was all of those things put together. I think of Ringer in the same way.

You’ve talked before about seeking roles with strong, complex females. So what attracted you to playing Bridget and Siobhan?
Duality is something I’ve been interested in for a while. Who do we think we are? Who do other people think we are? There’s duality in everyone’s personality. Who we are at work may not be who we are on the weekend. The ultimate duality is playing two people who may be hiding things or pretending to be someone else. That just sounded challenging and fun.

Is it an added challenge that you play sisters?
Actually, I play three characters: Bridget, Siobhan, and Shivette—which is Bridget pretending to be Siobhan. I think of her as her own character. It’s funny, because it’s caught on. Like, in the writers’ room they refer to her as Shivette. Wardrobe, too.

You have a famously loyal fan base thanks to Buffy. How does it make you feel to know that people are still so passionate about that show?
We were a mid-season replacement on the WB based on a failed movie. Without the loyal fans, the show wouldn’t exist, and that’s the beauty of having vocal fans. The best thing in the world is when someone comes up to you and says, “I love your show” and then walks away. It’s a genuine moment. They don’t want anything other than to tell you that.

On the flipside, do you get the creepster fans who paint portraits of you and show up at the airport every time you fly?
People don’t usually notice me at the airport. I do okay. I’m protective of my private life and I think my fans have always been respectful of that. I’ve been lucky in that the attention has always been about the work and not about who I’m dating or where I’m vacationing. I have the greatest fans.

Lastly, any chance we’re gonna see any more Sarah-Michelle-on-woman kisses from you?
Absolutely! Selma [Blair] and I like to make sure we keep that up, you know, just cause. That’s actually one of the first things I said to her man. I said, “We have a lot in common. We both think your woman is a great kisser.” But with the twists on Ringer, you never know what could happen. I’m not saying it’ll be me, but it might be somebody else.

Shivette is a lesbian!
I’m not naming names…

Don’t miss Gellar starring in the series premiere of Ringer, Tuesday, Sept 13, 9/8C on The CW.
