Lil Nas X's Letter to His 14-Year-Old Self Is Heartwarming AF

The "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)" rapper opened up about coming out and being an unapologetically queer artist.

Lil Nas X's latest music video for his latest single "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)" might have broken the internet for its unapologetic queerness and its bright, sexy, biblical allusions, but it's a letter he wrote to his younger self that is pulling all of our attention (and heartstrings).

To commemorate the release of his latest bop, the Grammy-winning "Old Town Road" rapper took to his Twitter account to share a message he wrote to the teenage version of him, and in it, he opens up about coming out and his emotional but worthwhile journey to self-acceptance as a gay artist in an overwhelmingly heteronormative world.

"Dear 14-year-old Montero, I wrote a song with our name in it," the 21-year-old, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, started his letter to his past self. "It’s about a guy I met last summer. I know we promised to never come out publicly, I know we promised to never be 'that' type of gay person, I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist."

He continued:

"You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I'm pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the fuck out of other people's lives and stop dictating who they should be. Sending you love from the future."

We know 14-year-old Montero would be so, so proud of you, X!
