Victoria Monét's debut album is here! The longtime Ariana Grande songwriter shines on "Jaguar," the title track of the album and short film where Monét finds herself leaving the monotony of her old life behind. "I want women to feel empowered, and I want men to get used to us talking about our bodies, our sexuality, our desires—all the things men talk about in regards to us," she said in a statement.
The animated video for "Jaguar" is an exotic explosion of Black feminine power and beauty and the song offers a groovy disco-inspired flaunting of her own. "Let's get wild/just like we're supersonic," she sings, and we can't help but get up and dance.
Electro-pop duo REYNA just released our quarantine anthem with "Lonely Girl," a hopelessly catchy dance-ode to isolation and social anxiety, something many of us can relate to right now.
"Last year I struggled with the worst social anxiety and panic attacks," said Gab. "I had never experienced anything like it before. It was so hard to be around people...I felt so alone and misunderstood...I am doing so much better today. Even though this year has had its challenges, dancing like a Lonely Girl in my room has made me feel like everything is going to be alright even if it’s just for a little bit."
Mathew V's sophomore album Two Faced dropped today and with it, twelve tracks of his signature soulful vocals. The album certainly feels like he's working through a break-up, an effective combination of bouncy kiss-off dance tracks and sweeping heartbreak ballads.
Standouts on the album include the aching admission of guilt in "Flashback," the team up with Jocelyn Alice for the demanding duet "Missing Me," and the devastatingly beautiful cover of the Britney Spears classic "Lucky."
"I've been watching you from across the room/I wanna dance," sings CHIKA in her romantic new track "U Should." "She like the sun/This how you feel when you stunned."
CHIKA's warm voice, the lullaby of the guitar, and horns that feel like the butterflies in your stomach make you feel like you're at a school dance and you just asked for the hand of your crush. You walk to the middle of that converted gym, place a nervous hand around each other's hips, and begin to sway. The spotlight settles on you, and everything just feels right in the world.
Talk about a flex! RuPaul's Drag Race star The Vixen just dropped her fearless new album Commercial Break. Throughout the ten-track album, Vixen playfully dips her toes in heavy trap beats, ballroom dance, and even uplifting throwback R&B jams. And as usual, she's never afraid to spill the tea.
Highlights include the powerful flex of "I Be the Vixen," checking bitches on "Give a Bitch a Break" alongside Dida Ritz and Lucy Stoole, and the empowering reflections about her own story in "It's Happening."
"I wish I could find a way to show you how I'm feeling," queer singer-songwriter Cassidy King riffs on her latest track "Wasted," an angsty questioning of someone choosing to spend their time with her instead of...anyone else. The track is steeped with flavors of today's indie-pop, along with hints of R&B and reggae that make it an eclectic standout on this week's list.
King says the song "speaks on the difficulty of knowing when it’s safe to fall and being able to fully trust in that commitment when you can’t see what they see in you. I’m afraid to be vulnerable in relationships, especially when they’re good for me. I tend to chase relationships that aren't healthy because being uncomfortable is something I’ve grown used to. I’m learning to accept someone unconditionally through the acceptance of myself. 'Wasted' is a reassurance that you’re worthy of good love and a reminder that it’s okay to fall, but only if they’re holding onto you tightly."
Do you want to get wild with Troye Sivan? The singer-songwriter is ready to "fuck shit up again" in his latest track, a mid-tempo ode to the young and reckless. The song is “A letter to your old self, and a little bit of hope for the future,” he recently said on TikTok. The track quickly transports me to teenagerdom. All that adolescent angst...
While Washed Out isn't an openly-LGBTQ+ identifying band, the latest visuals for their song "Paralyzer" portray a stunning queer story starring real-life couple Shay and Dorien in the Holland countryside. Off of Washed Out's upcoming album Purple Noon, the song tells the story of someone who can't get their love off of the mind. Soft and sensual Sade vibes ooze all over the indie-pop track and the girls in the video hum along before deciding to strip in the rain and act on their love for each other. If you're ready for a slightly NSFW love story, prepare your hearts.
