Blair St. Clair Creates Her Soundtrack of Pride
Which songs helped Blair St. Clair during her formative years?
We all have those songs that are forever ingrained in our coming-of-age stories. Songs that gave us hope, played during our first kiss, helped us feel fierce, or simply helped us understand ourselves a little bit better. This is oftentimes particularly true for LGBTQ artists.
Throughout the month of June, and only on PRIDE, LGBTQ+ artists are curating and sharing playlists that reflect their formative years—their Soundtracks of Pride.
Blair St. Clair competed on Season 10 of RuPaul's Drag Race and has already released a handful of club bangers. Scroll down to check out Blair's playlist and read why she picked each song!
"Got My Number" - Kim Petras
"A new anthem by a celebrated Transgender artist who inspires me!"
"Bloom" - Troye Sivan
"The underlying symbol and metaphor for sex mixed with a contemporary sound is genius!"
"I'm Here" - The Color Purple
"I’m a Broadway Baby at heart. That’s where I first fell in love with the storytelling music is able to capture. This song will always touch my heart as a reminder that we are all beautiful for what’s inside our hearts no matter what we present to the outside world or what trials we’ve faced."
"Sober" - Demi Lovato
"As a sober, gay man this song inspires me about exposing the truth behind addiction and how difficult it can be in life to remain sober even when people on the outside think you 'have it made.' This makes me value my sobriety and clear mind and body I have today."
"Witness" - Katy Perry
"Katy Perry describes something we all think and feel, 'we’re all looking for connection...we all just want to be seen,' and I think as Queen individuals we so often feel like outcasts when we should remember we are all unified as one."
"Revival" - Selena Gomez
"To me, this song says 'despite the mistakes in the past, go ahead, and don’t allow anyone to drag you down.'"
"Daddy Issues" - Demi Lovato
"This song cuts deep with the lyrics 'you’re the man of my dreams because you know how to leave.' So much of my adolescence I felt misunderstood, as I’m sure more teens feel, but I felt very out of place in terms of understanding and finding my sexual orientation. I found it odd that I needed to 'title' it and label how I felt. That felt disturbingly permanent to me. I feel Demi Lovato’s pain of connecting to her upbringing of uncertainty and uncomfortable feelings."
"In My Head" - Ariana Grande
"Simply put, 'it was all in my head.' This song is about coming to terms with people from the past and seeing them for their real intention which I can relate to after becoming more of a public figure."
"The Edge Of Glory" - Lady Gaga
"To me, this isnup to interpretation, but I see being 'on the edge of glory' is the turning point of acceptance that life is a blessing."
"I'm Coming Out" - Diana Ross
"This is an iconic song that I also relate to personally. This was my elimination song on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and it was my coming out party for the moment I began the journey to truly learn what loving myself meant."
"Toxic" - Britney Spears
"This is just a fun bop I’ve always loved, and this is also the very first lip sync song I ever performed!"
"Supermodel (You Betta Work)" - RuPaul
"I remember hearing this song as a young gayby and I would prance around my house to it. RuPaul was the first person that I publicly saw where I thought, 'Wow! I can be fabulous just like that!'"
"It's Raining Men" - Weather Girls
"This is an iconic song I’ve performed for years. It just makes me feel good! Not to mention, I wouldn’t mind a world of 'raining men.'"
"Seasons Of Love" - Rent
"This musical is so special and dear to my heart. The words spoken here are so true. Always remember to 'measure the love.' All types of love. I treasure love."
"Snapshot" - RuPaul feat. Macutchi
'Fun fact- This was my runway song for season 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Every time I hear it I HAVE to strut!"
"Not My Fathers Son" - Kinky Boots
"This song is so beautiful. It’s from a very moving musical called Kinky Boots which follows the love of a drag queen and how she mixes with a straight man, and the two of them create a product together! This song reveals Lola’s heart about who she is behind the makeup, and that speaks so much to me as sometimes people forget who I am behind my facade."
