Look sharp, New Yorkers!
A new performer for the final day of NYC World Pride has been announced. And it’s…
Madonna!
The Queen of Pop herself will be taking the stage at Pride Island to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and the general fabulousness of LGBTQ citizens everywhere.
“I hear you! I’ll be on Pride Island, where I was born,” she said, breaking the news herself in a video on the Today Show earlier this morning.
\u201cWe're breaking some big news from @Madonna! She'll be appearing at Pride Island in NYC, where she'll perform a few songs on June 30.\n\nMadonna will also sit down for an interview with our @harrysmith!\u201d— TODAY (@TODAY) 1559564301
Her announcement doesn’t come as a surprise to many fans, who’d been speculating that the ultimate Material Girl would be showing up at the event for weeks. With her new album, Madame X, set to come out on June 14th, it’s perfect timing for a new performance from an icon and longtime supporter of the LGBTQ community.
The Saturday line-up for NYC Pride currently includes Teyana Taylor, Pabilo Vitta, Kim Petras, and Amara La Negra, with Grace Jones headlining.
However, the wording for Sunday’s event remains a little strange, noting that Madonna “will perform a couple songs to help close out WorldPride,” though a note in bold still says Sunday’s headliner will be announced at a later date.
Is the note a remnant from the site prior to Madonna’s announcement? Or is there really a different headliner still waiting to be announced? And if so, who could it possibly be? Especially with Madonna herself rounding up the line-up?
We don’t have the answers, but we do know we’re super jealous of anyone who has the good fortune of attending Pride Island in NYC this year!
The event will be held during NYC Pride weekend, June 29th and June 30th, but good luck getting tickets if you don’t already have them — they’ve been sold out for ages.
