Betty Who Opened Up on Instagram About Dating Men & Women

"Not that I should have to justify myself to you or anyone, but I have been in relationships with both men and women."

Pop singer and PRIDE fave Betty Who took to Instagram recently and opened up about how she has dated both men and women in the past.

In the post, which contains screenshots taken from Betty's June Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread, a fan asked her:

"Your music is very accessible to everyone, but it undeniably strikes a chord with gay men. From what I’ve seen you like to unabashedly reach out to a queer audience (gay men in particular) and do you ever feel, I don’t know, out of place in these spaces? I love being pandered to, but do you ever feel like (this is probably the wrong word but it’s the best I got) exploitative or something as a straight woman in a room full of gays? What do you feel like your relationship to our community is?"

Betty, who is a longtime and outspoken LGBT activist, responded to the fan's question of whether or not she feels like she belongs in the queer community, saying:

"My answer to your question is no, I have never felt out of place and I absolutely do not think I’ve ever pandered to or exploited the gay community. I love pop music. So does a lot of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m accepting and open and honest and vulnerable and want to make fun music that makes people want to dance. I talk about finding yourself and learning through trial and error who you want to be. That seems to resonate with my fans who are from the LGBTQ+ community."

She continued, revealing to the fan that she has been in relationships with men and women before.

"Not that I should have to justify myself to you or anyone, but I have been in relationships with both men and women. I have been deeply, earth shatteringly in love with both men and women. Just because I happen to be engaged to a man doesn’t mean that I haven’t found a home within the gay community. But most importantly, I have found a community that celebrates themselves and 'other-ness,'" she wrote. "I have never felt more understood or at home. My fans from the LGBTQ+ community have embraced my music, I hope, because they like it. Not because I am pedaling it to a specific demographic. I speak my mind and talk about equality and what I believe, which I think is my responsibility. I want to use my power for good instead of evil..."
