Hurts' Empowering New Music Video Shines a Light on Anti-LGBTQ Violence
"We are the beautiful ones."
Hurts' moving new music video is a heartbreaking and empowering anthem for queer people everywhere.
The band describes their new song "Beautiful Ones" as a "celebration of individuality" and explores "themes of hate, love, brutality, and beauty" in the music video.

The video begins in the minutes after a queer club-goer is brutally assaulted on their walk home and plays backwards to show the night's tragic events. As the video rewinds, we see our heroine carefree and smiling and dancing with their friends, and the would-be assailants watching jealously from afar. "We are the beautiful ones," the lead singer chants over a synthy-dance beat, begging you not to forget it.

In a world where simply being yourself is a political statement, existing out and proud is an act of bravery. Considering nine transgender women have been murdered this year and gay men are being put in concentration camps in Chechnya, the video's jarring portrayal of anti-LGBTQ violence feels especially relevant.
