American singer, Tori Amos, made a bold statement last month when she chose to cover t.A.T.u’s “Not Gonna Get Us” at her concert in Moscow. Though t.A.T.u may have just used the lesbian image to their advantage, their songs were still prominent in the early 2000’s. Their hit song, “All The Things She Said,” with the video that featured the duo locking lips, is a song and image that I probably will never get out of my head.
It was with an interview with an Australian news site where Amos stated that the t.A.T.u cover was a “really good idea” suggested by her Russian audience.
“You can’t be coy about it. To play a t.A.T.u song, a lesbian anthem, in Moscow – you’ve gotta grab it with both hands,” Amos said, “because if you don’t, it’s not going to work.”
However, the best part is when Amos said she didn’t know that Putin, Russia’s anti-gay president, would have a speech on that same stage the next day.
Amos, who supports LGBT equality and has a strong LGBT fanbase, has also covered Conchita Wurst’s song “Rise Like A Phoenix” on her latest tour to promote her album, Unrepentant Geraldines.
