There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, either from laughing or crying, at the emotionally charged and celebrity-filled Trevor Project Benefit in Hollywood, California on Sunday night.
Amy Poehler acted as the evening’s emcee for Trevor Project’s annual fundraising event, Trevor Live, and Entertainment Weekly reports the Parks & Recreations tar hilariously introduced herself at the head of the night as none other than, “the founder of Facebook, the creator of Harry Potter, and the best of Herman Cain’s lovers.”
The performances and personal speeches by presenters inspired guests to donate funds for the Trevor Project’s crisis-intervention and suicide-prevention services available to any and all LGBT and questioning youth.
Many of the nights’ major stars chose to ring in the holiday spirit with traditional carols. EW noted that when Queen Latifah sang, she struggled to stifle a giggle over the lyrics, “make the yuletide gay.” American Idol alum Kris Allen performed the hopeful ballad, “Imagine.” LeAnn Rimes sang “What I Cannot Change,” joined by actor Dermot Mulroney on cello. Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka also performed in a bed, choosing “You’re the Top” from Anything Goes for their number.
There were also somber tears that evening, like when Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” commercial was shown before Google received their 2020 Award.
Lady Gaga humbly accepted her Hero Award from the family of Jamey Rodemeyer, and told the audience, “This means more to me than any Grammy I could ever win. I learned long ago that my time on earth would not be just for pop singing.”
Another emotional moment resonated when recently out stars Zachary Quinto and Amber Heard took the stage to present. Quinto’s eloquent recount of his own experience choked up Heard, who then had trouble reading her script through teary eyes. “They only sent me my script [so] I wasn’t prepared to hear that,” EW.com reports her explaining. “Sorry if I stumble through my part.”
Luckily, the winning Poehler was on hand to lighten the mood after the touching moment. As the two beautiful out celebs walked off, Poehler comforted them with the validation that, “God would have sex with both of you.”
