This movie looks so good it's scary.

“This is a safe space... for everyone,” Kevin Bacon’s character says as the teaser trailer for the highly anticipated queer horror film They/Them (pronounced “they slash them”) opens. But it isn’t and it can’t be — for one thing, this is a horror movie, and for another, a group of young queer kids has arrived at a conversion camp, a true real-world fright fest and the perfect setting for a modern-day slasher.

But don’t let the location fool you, because this film is the passion project of gay director and executive producer John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator, The Aviator) who’s been dreaming of making a project just like it for a long time. “They/Them has been germinating within me my whole life. I’ve loved horror movies as long as I can remember, I think because monsters represent ‘the other’ and as a gay kid I felt a powerful sense of kinship with those characters who were different, outlawed, or forbidden,” said Logan, the film’s writer and director, in commentary provided along with the teaser. “I wanted to make a movie that celebrates queerness, with characters that I never saw when I was growing up. When people walk away from the movie, I hope they’re going to remember the incredible love that these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated.”

The film is being described as a queer empowerment story set in a gay conversion camp where several queer and trans campers are sent for a week of programming with the intent of helping them “find a new sense of freedom.” However, the campers are instead exposed to psychologically unsettling situations of increasing intensity, which leads them to band together in order to protect themselves. Oh, and then a mysterious masked killer begins claiming victims.

Starring alongside Bacon, who portrays camp owner Owen Whistler, are a bevy of out actors and queer faves (and soon-to-be fan faves) including Theo Germaine, Anna Chlumsky, Carrie Preston, Quei Tann, Austin Crute, Monique Kim, Anna Lore, Cooper Koch, and Darwin del Fabro.

They/Slash will debut on Peacock Friday, August 5. Watch the teaser trailer below
