The legacy of Scream continues, with a sixth movie currently underway. While many of the cast members have left the franchise over the years (after their characters died terrible, unforgettable deaths), some are still keeping tabs.
Jasmin Savoy Brown recently opened up to PEOPLE about a sweet interaction she had with Jamie Kennedy regarding her role in the fifth film.
“I messaged him after the movie came out and was like, ‘Did you like it?’” she said. “And he gave his blessing and said he was proud. That made me feel really good.”
Brown was among the new Scream hires, a second attempt to revitalize the franchise revolving around a new generation of stalked and slashed suburbanites. She plays Mindy Meeks-Martin, niece of Kennedy’s late film buff character, Randy Meeks, and daughter to his sister Martha Meeks (Heather Matarazzo).
Filming of the latest entry in the iconic franchise is currently taking place in Montreal, but Brown isn’t letting any spoilers slip about what's next.
“Mindy is Mindy as ever and she’s still a little homo like me,” is all the actress had to offer.
Scream 6 is a new turn for the movies, as it will be the first not to feature star Neve Campbell, who helmed the series as perpetual final girl Sidney Prescott all these years. Negotiations reportedly broke down after Campbell felt she wasn’t being offered fair monetary compensation for the significant part she’s played in making these movies a success for 26 years.
“I absolutely respect her for that. I think that it’s hard to be a woman in this industry and in any industry at all,” Brown told Variety. “If any person, but especially any woman, feels that she deserves more — whether that’s a financial situation with work, out of a relationship, out of fill in the blank — if she can walk away, I support that.”
Scream 6 is currently aiming for theatrical release on March 31, 2023.
