Popstar Troye Sivan has made his leading man debut in his new Paramount Plus film, Three Months.
The story follows Caleb (Sivan), a Florida teen who receives a text from a one-night stand that he just tested positive for HIV. Now Caleb must get tested, but as HIV can take up to three months to show up in the body, he spends his summer before going off to college anxiously waiting. Those three months are not without drama: his best friend and coworker Dara is hooking up with their boss, and Caleb quickly falls for another boy waiting for his test results.
It's a heartfelt coming-of-age film tackling all the uncertainties of love and life in your teenage years as well as challenging the stigma surrounding HIV, but it's not exactly a drama. More of a dramedy, as the movie is littered with dark and hilarious moments of the teens coping with their predicament.
A few of those include Taylor Swift references, which become a recurring joke in the film. The ever-so-nerdy Estha introduces Caleb to the singer and he quickly becomes obsessed, at one point even making up a fake song title: “This Is What I Get for Riding Bareback.”
Sivan, who is a fan and friend of Swift, said those moments were "very, very fun" to include. "I don't know if this is like public information but [writer/director] Jared Frieder is literally – I know this is a big thing to say – I think he's her number one fan."
Laughing, Sivan continues, "He wrote this crazy letter to her and got to meet her because of it. He is a super fan. So yeah, I'm happy that he managed to work her into the script a fair few times."
The film also features original music by Sivan. The two songs are titled "Trouble" and "Wait" and he "actually wrote them completely for the film" from the perspective of Caleb. "That was really fun for me as a songwriter."
