Popstar Charli XCX revealed just how important the LGBTQ+ documentary has been in her music career and life in her brand new documentary, Alone Together.
Chronicling the high points of her career in late 2019 into 2020, the "Good Ones" singer shares that her strong queer following has had a massive impact on her life.
"In 2016, I released 'Vroom Vroom' and I found support from a strong, proud LGBTQ+ audience," she says in a voiceover. "Their confidence really inspired my own confidence and I began to understand who I am as a person and as an artist."
A handful of LGBTQ+ fans in the doc share how XCX changed their lives and brought them into a community of fandom and friends. XCX was even known to drop into their group chats and talk about how she was feeling, whether that was insecure and unfulfilled or just a casual conversation.
Over the years, their support and strength inspired her, XCX says. "The fact that they were able to show me bravery, even if it was just through an Instagram post or a through a tweet or a simple comment, that made me feel like it was okay to be vulnerable because I felt so accepted by them."
As the pandemic thrust the world into lockdown, a restless XCX decided to create an album in isolation, titled how I'm feeling now. The documentary goes on to catalog the album's inception, creation, and behind-the-scenes drama, as well as features cameos from a slew of LGBTQ+ musicians including Christine and the Queens, Ashnikko, Diplo, Clairo, and more.
