Buckle in queer Disney fans! Emma Stone and Emma Thompson's upcoming film Cruella might be giving us the LGBTQ+ representation we've been wanting for DECADES!
According to a tweet from film insider and YouTuber Grace Randolph, out actor John McCrea will be playing Artie, the first major LGBTQ+ character in a Disney flick.
"We have the 1st officially out and proud #Disney character in her gang!" Randolph wrote.
She continued: "It’s the character played by John McCrea. He has several scenes and plays a very important role, including saving another character!"
Like our sister publication The Advocate points out, McCrea has acted in several LGBTQ+ productions, including God's Own Country and Dracula, as well as starring in the filmed, 2018 stage version of Everybody's Talking About Jamie, the musical about a teen who becomes a drag queen.
Considering how long Disney fanatics have been waiting for actual, meaningful LGBTQ+ representation in a major Disney title, this news is extremely welcome!
An origin story we've been waiting for eons for, Cruella is set in London in the '70s in the midst of the punk rock revolution, and "follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs," reads the film's official description.
"She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman (fellow Oscar winner Emma Thompson), a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella."
Cruella hits theaters on May 28!
