Actor and comedian Andy Samberg stars in Palm Springs, Hulu's latest supernatural rom-com with a twisted sense of humor.
Samberg plays Nyles, a guest at a Palm Springs wedding who's been trapped in a Groundhog-Day-time-loop situation for who knows how long. However his day ends, whether it's just passing out from too many margaritas or dying at the hands of the guy who's hunting him, he wakes up on the day of the wedding, and repeat. At the point we meet him in the movie, he's settled into the loop and is content just fooling around every day, apathetic even towards his cheating girlfriend, and spends his time day-drinking and picking different wedding guests to try and hook up with.
Today, he chats up Sarah, the distraught sister of the bride who quickly takes a liking to Nyles. The two run off to hook up in the desert but when that plan is derailed because of a guy with a bow and arrow who's hunting Nyles, Sarah gets sucked into the loop with him.
It goes about as well as you might think for her. Sarah has several breakdowns, self-destructive moments, and even a darkly comedic suicide attempt to try and get out of the loop, but after Sarah gets past the initial shock, the two actually start having fun together. She asks Nyles about what—and who—he's been getting into since the loop began.
Nyles lists all the people he's hooked up with including Jerry, a handsome groomsmen in the wedding.
Shocked, Sarah asks, "You fucked him?"
"He fucked me," Samberg smiles. "He put his penis in my butthole."
"Yeah, I know how it works," Sarah retorts.
"I'm really glad I tried it. He's a sweet guy."
It's a small moment in the film, especially once you get swept up in Nyles and Sarah's wacky supernatural romance, but a hilarious and powerful one.
In many films and television, if a man confesses that he's experimented sexually with other men, the woman just assumes he's secretly gay and the moment is obsessively analyzed until it becomes contentious, oftentimes leading to the couple's break up.
There's no suspicion or homophobia from Sarah or Nyles when discussing Jerry, a refreshing moment even if it was played for laughs. Nyles tried it, enjoyed the experience, and moved on, noting that it wasn't for him. This is the correct reaction between anyone sharing their queer sexual experiences.
Let's normalize sexual fluidity and experimentation in men please!
Palm Springs is a hilarious rollercoaster ride on an infinity loop, and definitely worth a watch. Catch it on Hulu now!
