"According to a study from GLAAD, 80% of Americans don't actually know someone who is transgender. That means most people learn about trans people from the ways they're depicted in movies and TV."
Disclosure is out to set the record straight. The new Netflix documentary dives into the good, the bad, and the ugly of trans representation and gives "an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender," the official description reads.
Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox, Pose star Mj Rodriguez, The Matrix director Lilly Wachowski, Strong Island director Yance Ford, actress Candis Cayne, Sense8's Jamie Clayton, writer Tre'vell Anderson, and more prominent trans voices in media chronicle over 100 years of transgender representations, share their stories, react to some moments in trans history, and show exactly why representation is so important.
"The ways in which trans people have been represented have suggested that we're mentally ill, that we don't exist," says Laverne Cox. "Yet here we are and we've always been here."
