Charlize Theron stars in The Old Guard, Netflix's upcoming action thriller, and PRIDE has learned that the film features a centuries-long same-sex romantic relationship.
Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Theron plays a warrior named Andy who leads "a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die." The crew has "fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary."
Marwan Kenzari plays Yusuf Al-Kaysani and Luca Marinelli plays Nicky, two members of Andy's immortal crew. We don't know much about their romance just yet, but you can spot the two giving each other longing looks in the trailer.
"Just because we keep living doesn't mean we stop hurting," the immortals grapple with in the trailer.
The action and supernatural genres severely lack LGBTQ+ representation so we can't wait to see what The Old Guard has in store for us!
