7 New LGBTQ+ Holiday Movies & Shows We're Excited AF For This Year

Ready to make the yuletide hella gay this holiday season?!

The majority of 2020 may have not given us a lot to be joyous and cheery about, but the holiday season is nearly upon us, and while it's going to look and feel a lot different this year considering all that's going on in the world, we do have a lot of LGBTQ+ content to help us get in the spirit! 

The amount of queer-inclusive, holiday-themed shows and TV shows that the remainder of 2020 has to offer is unprecedented, so here are 7 titles we're so looking forward to watching!

Friendsgiving

People throw "Friendsgiving" parties to get away from the craziness of their families during Thanksgiving, but sometimes getting all your friend groups together under one roof for a night of food & drinks can be just as chaotic! Kat Dennings (Dollface, 2 Broke Girls) plays a queer character in this new comedy about hilarious dysfunctional friends alongside Malik Akerman, Aisha Tyler, and Jane Seymour! 

Friendsgiving is streaming on-demand now. 

Dash & Lily

Based on the Dash & Lily's Book of Dares young adult series from authors Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, Netflix's newest holiday rom-com series tells the story of the budding romance between two New Yorkers named Dash (Euphoria's Austin Abrams) and Lily (The Birch's Midori Frances), who communicate their innermost thoughts, hopes, and feelings with each other using a red notebook. From the looks of the official trailer the series also features queer characters, most notably Lily's brother Langston (Troy Iwata)! 

Dash & Lily premieres November 10 on Netflix! 

The Christmas House

Starring out Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett, The Christmas House is Hallmark's first-ever holiday movie to center an LGBTQ+ storyline! 

"Working through some difficult decisions, Mitchell family matriarch Phylis (Sharon Lawrence) and patriarch Bill (Treat Williams), have summoned their two grown sons — Mike (Robert Buckley) and Brandon (Jonathan Bennett) — home for the holidays," the film's official description reads. "It is their hope that bringing the family together to recreate the Christmas house will help them find resolution and make a memorable holiday for the entire family and community. As Brandon and his husband, Jake (Brad Harder), make the trip home, they are anxiously awaiting a call about the adoption of their first child. Meanwhile, Mike reconnects with Andi (Ana Ayora), his high school sweetheart."

The Christmas House premieres Sunday, November 22 at 8pm on the Hallmark Channel.

Happiest Season

Starring LGBTQ+ icons Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, and Dan Levy, writer and director Clea DuVall's holiday rom-com Happiest Season is set to be one of the queerest holiday films ever created! 

The upcoming Hulu film follows Abby (played by KStew) who plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) while attending Harper's family holiday party, only to discover her girlfriend hasn't actually come out to her conservative parents yet...

"I think I've wished to see a gay Christmas rom-com my whole life," Kristen said about the film. "I'm so happy and proud of Clea for bringing this into the world."

Happiest Season premieres November 25 on Hulu. 

I Hate New Year's

While New Year's is supposed to be a holiday about positivity, freshness, and new beginnings, IRL, it doesn't always work out that way, especially if you can't seem to get over someone. And Tello Film's upcoming queer rom-com I Hate New Year's (which stars Candis Cayne, Dia Frampton, and Ashley Argota) is a perfect example of this!

"Experiencing writer’s block, rising music star Layne Price (Dia Frampton), at her Los Angeles manager’s insistence, reluctantly visits mysterious fortune teller Zelena (Candis Cayne), whose flamboyant advice she misconstrues. Heading home to Nashville for New Year’s Eve, a holiday she hates, Layne hits the town with BFF Cassie Holmes (Ashley Argota)," reads the movie's official description. "While Cassie plans to finally confess that her feelings have evolved into more than friendship, Layne is too focused on "bumping into" her elusive ex to notice. But sometimes you find inspiration and love — with a little mystical intervention — where you least expect it."

I Hate New Year's premieres on-demand on December 4.

The Christmas Setup

Starring Arrow's Ben Lewis alongside his IRL husband Blake Lee, Glow's Ellen Wong, and TV icon Fran Drescher, The Christmas Setup is Lifetime's upcoming answer to the serious lack of LGBTQ+ representation in holiday-themed media! 

The official description reads:

"The Christmas Setup follows the story of New York lawyer Hugo (Ben Lewis) who heads to Milwaukee with his best friend Madelyn (Ellen Wong) to spend the holidays with his mom Kate (Fran Drescher), who is also in charge of the local Christmas celebrations. Ever the matchmaker, Kate arranges for Hugo to run into Patrick (Blake Lee), Hugo’s high school friend and secret crush, who has recently returned after a successful stint in Silicon Valley. As they enjoy the local holiday festivities together, Hugo and Patrick’s attraction to each other is undeniable and it looks as though Kate’s Santa-style matchmaking is a success. But as Hugo receives word of a big promotion requiring a move to London, he must decide what is most important to him."

The Christmas Setup premieres December 12 at 8pm ET/PT on Lifetime.

Dashing in December

Taking the tried-and-true Christmas movie formula of a big city slicker returning to their small home town for the holiday season to find love unexpectedly, but making it gay? That's exactly what Paramount's upcoming queer rom-com Dashing in December is doing, and we absolutely love to see it! And from the looks of the first trailer, it looks like we're going to be getting all sorts of warm, fuzzy holiday feels! (With a little bit of cute cowboys on the side!)

According to the movie's official description, Dashing in December follows the story of a guy named Wyatt (Peter Porte), "a sophisticated, New York City financier who returns home for the holidays in an effort to convince his mother, Deb (screen veteran Andie MacDowell) to sell the family’s ranch and beloved magical Winter Wonderland attraction. In the midst of his mission, an unexpected romance ignites with the new ranch hand Heath (Juan Pablo Di Pace) reawakening the spirit of Christmas." SIGN. US. UP. 

Dashing in December premieres December 13 at 7pm on Paramount Network.
