Brokeback Mountain, the groundbreaking queer 2005 Acadamy-Award winning film directed by Ang Lee, is getting a 2020 facelift.
NewFest, New York City’s annual LGTBQ+ film festival, is hosting a virtual live-read of Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry's screenplay where the entire cast will consist of transgender actors. In collaboration with Gaby Dunn's #MakeItGay live reads, table reads like this one are designed to "reimagine typically white, straight, cis and male films into ones with diverse casts of various queer people."
Leo Sheng (The L Word: Generation Q) will play Heath Ledger's character Ennis and Brian Michael Smith (911: Lone Star) will play Jake Gyllenhall's character, Jack. Jen Richards will play Alma, Alexandra Grey is Lurleen, and Disclosure director Sam Feder is the narrator.
"I think this film, while deeply touched by tragedy and trauma, was a milestone in the industry," Sheng shared with the announcement on Instagram. "You mention the title, and people tend to have a visceral response, from grief or heartache. Like so many queer stories on screen, it explored pain and vulnerability in a way that feels unshakable."
"I’m really looking forward to exploring what it means to have trans folks in these roles and the conversations it might inspire around casting and the nature/evolution of queer narratives!"
The Brokeback Mountain live table will take place on Sunday, October 18 at 6pm ET/3pm PT. RSVP here. It will be live-streamed on NewFest’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
While the event is free, it does have a suggested donation and proceeds will go to The NewFest Future Fund, to benefit NewFest and its programs for LGBTQ+ youth, filmmaker resources, and year-round screening programs, as well as the New York City Anti-Violence Project!
