We’ve finally gotten our first real look into the upcoming Judy Garland biopic, and it’s going to be as heartbreaking as expected.
Judy follows the last few months of the iconic actress’s life, as she prepares for a five-week run of shows in London. It’s adapted from the play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter.
In the first full-length trailer, we see Renée Zellweger step into the metaphorical ruby slippers, and get a taste of the pressure Garland was under to balance her tumultuous career, her devotion to her children, and a new whirlwind romance.
“Garland hopes that her act will help her maintain her star profile, especially considering a recent string of bad press against her. However, she still struggles with both her drug addictions and her strained relationships with the men around her,” reads the play's synopsis.
The film promises a number of Judy Garland songs that are almost as iconic as the star herself, including “Over the Rainbow” and “The Trolley Song” from Meet Me in St. Louis.
Zellweger was present at London Pride this weekend to give the crowd a first look at the trailer before its YouTube debut.
“In this monumental anniversary year, it’s important that we pay tribute to an icon who was a true ally to the LGBT+ community and whose death was undoubtedly intertwined with the events that happened that night at the Stonewall Inn,” said Deputy Director of Events at Pride in London Ian Massa-Harris-McFeely, referencing a longstanding theory that the crowd present at Stonewall the night of the riots was partly gathered to mourn Garland’s death, which had happened only a week earlier.
Judy is scheduled to hit theaters on September 27.
