First Still From Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan Lesbian Drama Released
Okay, now give us the movie please.
Francis Lee is doing the Lord’s work.
The director took to Twitter late last night to release the first still of Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan in his new lesbian historical drama, Ammonite.
“Thank you for all the incredible support,” Lee tweeted, alongside this adorable shot:
“Here’s the 1st still of my new film Ammonite. Joining Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are Fiona Shaw, James McCardle, Gemma Jones and one Alec Secareanu with cinematographer Stephane Fontaine. Thank you for all the incredible support ❤️”— Francis Lee (@Francis Lee) 1557815072
Winslet and Ronan were spotted filming back in March, with candid and distant shots of the actors and the set being captured by lurkers nearby, but this still is the first official photo released by the team behind the production.
Ammonite follows the unlikely romance between paleontologist Mary Anning and a London woman of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid.
The production has drummed up a minor splash of controversy, as there is no proof as to whether Anning was LGBTQ or ever in a relationship with a woman (or a man — she never married), and some of her descendants have taken issue with the liberties Lee is taking.
“I do not believe there is any evidence to back up portraying her as a gay woman,” Barbara Anning said. “Do the filmmakers have to resort to using unconfirmed aspects to somebody’s sexuality to make an already remarkable story sensational? This adds nothing to her story.”
Lee shrugged off the criticism, writing on social media that “given a historical figure where there is no evidence whatsoever of a heterosexual relationship, is it not permissible to view that person within another context?”
He also pointed out that if the “character’s sexuality had been assumed to be heterosexual,” this conversation wouldn’t even have happened.
Filming on Ammonite is reportedly coming to a close, and a release date has not yet been announced.
Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
