When news first broke that Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan would be starring together in a historical lesbian movie, fans were jumping out of their computer chairs in anticipation of more info.

We still don’t have much, BUT filming has begun, and we can at least get a first glimpse at what the two will look like in their roles in the period piece.

Ammonite is set in 1840s England, and tells the story of Mary Anning (played by Winslet), a fossil hunter who is credited with making key scientific discovers in the Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel.

The film sees Anning and another young woman (Ronan) developing an intense relationship by the sea.

While the relationship is possibly fictionalized (as parts of all historical movies generally are), Anning never married and was never noted as being in a heterosexual relationship, leading to some speculation that her close relationships with women were of a particularly intimate nature.

Ammonite is being directed by God’s Own Country director Frances Lee and is set to be released later this year.
