Billy Porter May Play Cinderella's Fairy Godmother in New Adaptation
Billy Porter may be taking on a new role, and it’s absolutely fabulous.
The actor is reportedly in talks to play the fairy godmother in the latest big screen adaptation of Cinderella — this one a product of Sony, rather than Disney.
The project is based on an idea from James Corden, and will be a musical film, much like the 1950 Disney cartoon. Kay Cannon (screenwriter of Pitch Perfect and director of Blockers) will be writing and directing the fairy tale, and former Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello is set to play Cinderella herself.
Considering Porter as Cinderella’s fairy godmother suggests Sony is taking some great liberties with the versions of the fairy tale that we’re all familiar with. But having the magical human that styles Cindy for the ball and gets her ready to meet her Prince Charming played by a gay man really makes so much more sense than having the character played by an elderly woman in a shapeless blue frock. Then again, it was the birds and the mice that did most of the work anyway.
The news of Porter's potential role comes alongside reports that Idina Menzel is in talks to play the wicked stepmother in the film. Menzel is best known for originating the role of Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, and voicing Elsa in Disney’s Frozen.
While a lot of folks still aren’t quite sold on the idea of yet another Cinderella movie, this potential casting news might sway some opinions. Though it’s always going to be difficult to come close to the REAL Cinderella of our childhoods…

Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
