Alicia Vikander and Lily James are getting married!
Well, sort of.
The two stars have joined the cast of the short film sequel to Four Weddings and a Funeral, which will premiere as a part of the UK’s Red Nose Day in March 2019.
And yes, they’re playing the brides.
Richard Curtis, the screenwriter of the original film and co-creator of Red Nose Day, also wrote this short sequel, and it’s reported that many of the original cast members are returning as well.
Four Weddings and a Funeral was released in 1994 and featured Hugh Grant attending a number of social functions over the years as he and Andie MacDowell repeatedly run into each other and gradually realize they’re meant to be.
James is reportedly playing their characters’ daughter in the sequel, with Vikander playing her bride.
While the original film also featured a gay couple, they were where the “funeral” part of the film came in. It will be nice to switch it up and see a queer celebration this time around instead of another queer tragedy.
And as an added bonus, Sam Smith is said to be playing the wedding singer.
“He's always more than happy to do his bit for charity, and this is an iconic remake for a good cause,” a source told the DailyMail. “His cameo won't be massive, but viewers won't miss him.”
Give us all the queer sequels to your romcoms, won't you, UK? And if you want to make them full-length films instead of shorts, we certainly won't be complaining.
In the meantime, guess we can just keep rewatching the Love, Actually one from last year while we wait for March...
