7 Non-Christmas Movies We're Excited For This Holiday Season
7 Non-Christmas Movies We're Excited For This Holiday Season
We know this time of year is supposed to be filled with cheer and good spirt and peace on Earth and yada yada yada, but after what already seems like weeks of Christmas preparations, there comes a point during the month of December where many of us feel like we've had ENOUGH of everything having to do with the holiday season. (Yup, we said it.)
Luckily for us, there are plenty of movies coming out this month that have NOTHING to do with Christmas, so if you need a break from all the gingerbread and candy canes and overly bright tree lights, head to the theater ASAP for a breath of fresh, holiday-free air.
Aquaman
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment's latest superhero offering is already smashing box office records overseas. The film—which tells the origin story of the classic Justice League character—stars Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa as the titular hero, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman as the fierce Queen Atlanna, and bisexual actress Amber Heard as Mera. With a badass cast like that, it's easy to see why!
Mary Queen of Scots
Starring Oscar-nominated actresses Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, Mary Queen of Scots tells the story of cousins Queen Mary I of Scotland (Ronan) and Queen Elizabeth I of England (Robbie), and the challenges and obstacles they face as female monarchs in a world where women still aren't even seen as equal.
There are some surprising queer moments in this historical period drama, and we're always here for a movie showcasing the relationship between two interesting, powerful women!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Peter Parker isn't the only web-slinging badass out there in the world, and in Sony Animation's upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, fans finally get to see all the different characters that make up the Spider-Man legacy, including main character Miles Morales (voiced by Dope and The Get Down alum Shameik Moore).
Into the Spider-Verse is a big win for diversity in the Marvel universe, as Morales (a teenager of Afro-Latino descent) is the first non-white, on-screen representation of Spider-Man!
If Beale Street Could Talk
The latest project from Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (who directed queer masterpiece Moonlight), If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of Tish, a young African American woman who is trying to prove the innocence of her husband Fonny after he is charged with a crime he didn't commit. Adapted from gay author James Baldwin's 1974 novel of the same name, If Beale Street Could Talk is already getting a ton of critical acclaim and is one of the titles to be on the lookout for this upcoming awards season!
Mary Poppins Returns
The long-awaited sequel to Disney's classic 1954 musical Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns sees Emily Blunt take over the titular role from the legendary Julie Andrews. Also starring Hamilton superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda, the new film will surely introduce one of the most beloved fictional characters to a new generation of fans!
The Favourite
There's no shortage of queer, historical period dramas this holiday season! In The Favourite, Duchess of Marlborough Sarah Churchill (played by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz) and her younger cousin Abigail Hill (fellow Oscar winner Emma Stone) vie for the attention and favoritism of England's Queen Anne (The Crown's Olivia Colman).
Once Upon a Deadpool
Once Upon a Deadpool is basically just a family-friendlier, PG-13 recut of Deadpool 2 (which was released earlier this year with an R rating). While hardcore Deadpool fans probably won't get much out of this re-release, a portion of the proceeds from tickets sales are going to charity, so at least it's for a good cause. (And plus, any chance we get to see Ryan Reynolds and Fred Savage parodying The Princess Bride, we're gonna take.)
