Reese Witherspoon is making a film about the true story of Megan Phelps-Roper, a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church.
Witherspoon has signed onto the film, titled This Above All, as a producer and is rumored to be playing Phelps-Roper, the daughter of Fred Phelps, founder of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church. After "ongoing conversations with opponents over Twitter led her to question her belief system," Phelps-Roper began to doubt her practices and upbringing and left the hate group with her sister in 2012. The sisters were promptly disowned by their family.
"Megan’s extraordinary story says so much about so many things in contemporary America, and I’m really excited about this project,” writer Nick Hornby told Variety. The film will be directed by Mark Webb (Amazing Spider-man) and adapted for screenplay by Hornby (Brooklyn, An Education).
The movie is based on The New Yorker piece, "Unfollow," and Phelps-Roper’s upcoming memoir.
