"Art is medicine right now," said the MTV Movie & TV Award winner.

At last night's MTV Movie & TV Awards (you know, the awards show where they did away with archaic gendered categories), Moonlight actors Jharrel Jerome and Ashton Sanders won the award for Best Kiss, beating out male-female couplings like La La Land's Emma Watson and Ryan Gosling and Beauty and the Beast's Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.

Jharrel talked to PRIDE on the red carpet a few hours before the awards took place, and speaking on he and Ashton's now award-winning kiss, he had this to say:

"Ashton is a pretty good kisser, not gonna lie. We did our thing on the beach and it was crazy because I almost don't remember much of it. We knew we had to dive into it, so we did our thing. I'm excited to see him tonight and celebrate this moment. I think it's incredible we both got nominated, I think it's incredible they took down the "man" and "woman" categories, and I think it's a step in the right direction."

And even though Hollywood still has a long way to go in terms of equal representation, especially for LGBT people and people of color, Jharrel also talked a little about the entertainment industry's steady increase in diverse narratives.

"It's incredible. It's about time," he said. "Art is medicine right now. I think that it's our job to continue to tell stories that people who love these shows and love these movies stop and actually think. The shows that are making people think, those are the types of shows that we need right now."
