The Call Me by Your Name Director Is Down for Sequel(s)
And Elio may not be gay in them.
During the BFI London Film Festival, Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino told ScreenDaily he has plans for multiple sequels to the film adaptation of the André Aciman novel.
"I want to do a sequel because Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel — they are all gems," Guadagnino said. "The texture we built together is very consistent. We created a place in which you believe in the world before them. They are young, but they are growing up."
Without spoiling too much, Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer) meet more than once in the span of their lives, which provides Guadagnino with ample material to stretch each installment of the story.
In the next one, Guadagnino's unsure if Elio will be gay.
"I don’t think Elio is necessarily going to become a gay man," the director said. "He hasn’t found his place yet."
He does see Elio exploring a romantic future with a female character, however. "I believe that he would start an intense relationship with Marzia again," he told ScreenDaily.
