Be prepared for writer/director Kerem Sanga’s First Girl I Loved to be your new favorite coming-of-age movie featuring teen girls in love. The film, starring Casual and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Dylan Gelula as Anne and out actress Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool) as Sasha, already made waves on the film festival circuit and is set for release on Oct. 18. And now the trailer is out, making us wish October would happen faster.
First Girl I Loved drops toward the beginning of the school year, right when young love is ramping up, and it’s sure to evoke nostalgia for nascent love gone by as two girls from opposite ends of the popularity spectrum find companionship, solace, and something deeper together. Dylan’s Anne is the school’s yearbook photographer and a bit of an outsider at their Los Angeles-based high school, while Brianna’s Sasha is the popular star of the softball team. But with all great drama, the course of love does not run smooth for these two when Anne’s best friend Clifton reveals, in often-destructive ways, that he has hidden feelings of his own.
The film also stars the great Emmy winner Pamela Adlon (Californication) as Anne’s mom, out comic Cameron Esposito, and Tim Heidecker of Tim and Eric.
Television aficionados will surely recognize Dylan from her turn as Jane Krakowski’s recalcitrant step-daughter on Kimmy Schmidt and as Aubrey, the teen who fell heartbreakingly hard for the non-committal Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) on Hulu’s Casual this season.
While Brianna might not be as instantly recognizable as Dylan (at this moment), you may want to prepare for her to be your new favorite out celebrity crush. Meanwhile, you can keep up with the adorable out actress on her Instagram page where she proudly posts pics with her girlfriend and with everything rainbow.
If we weren’t excited enough about First Girl I Loved’s release this fall, a portion of ticket sales and digital downloads of the film will go to benefit the It Gets Better Project, dedicated to inspiring changes to make the world a better place for LGBT youth. Pre-order the film on iTunes here.
With all of that in mind, here’s the trailer for First Girl I Loved. Let the Anna/Sasha shipping begin.
