Michael Sam made history as the NFL's first openly gay player. When he was drafted into the NFL, he warmed all our hearts (and got quite a few haters) when he gave his then-boyfriend Vito Cammisano an on-camera kiss that was seen around the world. But the road after that got harder for Sam, who faced homophobes and sports critics that accused him of being a publicity stunt and distraction for other players — among other things. Amidst reports that his relationship with Cammisano had ended, Michael Sam eventually left pro football in August of 2015, saying he needed to do so for mental health reasons. No matter what, we're always on Michael Sam's team, and we're rooting for the trailblazing football star!
