You might have heard that today the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. In fact, there's probably no way you haven't heard this, since it's just about everywhere on every site in existence. Clearly this is a day to be celebrating this nation-changing moment of equality for LGBT people, but in the spirit of equality, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the celebrities who said they'd wait to tie the knot with their opposite-sex partners until marriage was legal for everyone. We expect these folks will be getting some calls from anxious relatives hollering at them that they better be sending out invites right this moment. Equality for everyone!
Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard
There are a million reasons to love Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard's love for each other. A few of them involve an obsession with sloths, but others include their dedication to respecting their LGBT friends and the importance of equality. In an interview to The Advocate in 2012, Kristen opened up for the first time about why they were delaying an official wedding, explaining:
"The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. That’s why we’ve been so hesitant. Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period."
Well, Kristen and Dax, looks like wedding bells are a-go!
Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen
Last month, Sarah Silverman stopped by The Ellen Show, and she had some real talk to lay down about her feelings no marriage equality. When Ellen brought up that Sarah has expressed she won't get married until everyone can, her response was pretty on point. "Who would? That said I love when my friends get married and I'm so happy for them. But I just don't understand the instinct to want to join a club that is elitist. I mean it's like joining a country club that doesn't allow Jews or black people. What's the difference?" Well, now we can all join the country club! Welcome, Sarah Silverman!
Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff
Girl(s), I hope you're ready to have some Fun(.) walking down the aisle! Yet again Ellen DeGeneres apparently brings out the equality in everyone, and Lena discussed on the show that she intends to wait until marriage equality is legal nationwide. "Of course I don't judge anyone for wanting to get married, but the idea of having a celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at all." Well, time to pop some champagne, Lena and Jack. Or apparently, just send a tweet!
Jason Mraz and Whomever Jason Mraz Marries
Because Twitter is apparently the land of marriage proposals, Jason Mraz - who has also stood firmly against marrying before marriage equality - announced today the time has come to say "I'm Yours." We're not entirely sure who Jason Mraz is referring to in the tweet below (he split with fiance Tristan Prettyman in 2011), but this adorable songster is ready to jump into the canopy with someone!
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Superstars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been incredibly vocal about waiting to get married until same-sex marriage is legal and...
Oh wait. They got married last year. And Time.com was really upset about it. But you know what? Today's a great day to let go of anger and say, 'Hey, Brangelina, it's all good. We're all good,' and leave any negativity past. Now, we can all get married. Just make sure to Tweet your proposals for all to see!
