Before you go and spend all your money, fly 8+ hours to an exotic place, and experience serious culture shock, be smart, and do a few Google searches, just to make sure you are going to feel comfortable and safe for the duration of your vacation as an LGBT person.
1. [Your Destination] + LGBT
Look for any posts by trip advisor. They have an amazing forums that often speak to what the gay community is like in a city.
2. [Your Destination] + Lonely Planet
Not only can you get a lot of information about the culture, how to not be a culturally incompetant traveler while there, and you can search about the safety of place but clicking the essential information tab. All around great resource.
3. [Your Destination] + Gay Rights
Always good to know what the standing is politically of your LGBT brothers and sisters in the country you're hoping to visit.
4. [Your Destination] + Gay Friendly
This usually brings up a variety of websites, forums and comment threads, giving you a better picture of what to expect in the cities you choose to visit.
5. [Your Destination] + Gay Bars
Because you're already going to search that when you get there, so why not have an idea of what kinds of outfits to pack ;)
