A viral video of a Taiwanese man struggling with accepting his daughter after she comes out might make you shed a tear (or thirty).
The 65-year-old family man didn't quite know how to react when his first-born child came out to him. "When I found out that my oldest daughter is a lesbian, I was so shocked."
The concept of homosexuality was so foreign to the family that they didn't quite know how to handle the situation and reacted with anger and sadness. "But then," he says, "I realized that our child was even unhappier than us. It didn't matter that I was unhappy. But when my child is unhappy, that is unacceptable to me."
The father realizes what is important in their relationship and works hard to understand his daughter's experience. We watch with misty eyes as he greets his daughter and her partner, who have a daughter of their own.
"Love and acceptance," he says. "They are the answer."
I'm not crying, you are.
The video feels especially poignant as Taiwan is in the midst of an ongoing battle to become the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage.
