American Girl Denies Outing Molly Doll as Gay on First Day of Pride
American Girl had sapphics on the edge of their seats earlier this week with a post that some interpreted as finally acknowledging what so many of us have always suspected, that Molly McIntire isn’t just a queer icon, but is queer herself.
For those less familiar with the American Girl dolls, the popular brand has been releasing dolls representing certain times in American history since 1986. As such, millennials grew up with them — even those of us who couldn’t afford the dolls themselves were still reading the accompanying books and acutely aware of their stories. And everyone invested in these characters pretty much had a single favorite that best represented them or their interests.
While Molly arguably wasn’t the gayest doll, she still ticked a lot of boxes. As The Cutnoted, she wore a lot of argyle, was an athlete, and was notably fixated on a female teacher in her stories. And queer American Girl fans, once grown up, definitely picked up on all of these vibes.
“If you had Molly as your American Girl doll, you’re gay now, devoted to a lot of Very Good Causes, and self-describe as “an extroverted introvert,” but really, you just enjoy your own company the most & don’t trust easily.”— Sarah Kessler (@Sarah Kessler) 1565762657
“This morning I drank too much coffee and I spent my entire drive to work ranking American Girl Dolls on how gay they are.

Molly McIntire? That queen is GAY. Addy Walker? GAY. Julie Albright? GAY.”— Martha Harris (@Martha Harris) 1596211844
So when the American Girl Instagram decided to share a note specifically aimed at “the Molly girls” on the first day of Pride, it didn’t take long for LGBTQ+ people familiar with these dolls to read between the lines.
“To all the Molly girls in the world: We see you. And we celebrate you,” the post read.
“Not American Girl bringing Molly back in time for Pride!!!!!!!”— Tyler McCall (@Tyler McCall) 1654115395
“Wait did American Girl just confirm Molly's gay?????? if so i am THRIVING i am VINDICATED i fuckin KNEW IT”— Rosiee Thor (@Rosiee Thor) 1654119478

Unfortunately, we aren’t quite that lucky. American Girl told The Cut that “The new Molly collection releasing today is simply aligned with when all of our new summer product is debuting. Nothing more.”
It’s okay, American Girl. We know what we know.
Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
