We love a good girl group. We also love a good competition. Netflix gave us the best of both worlds in 2024 with the competition docuseries Dream Academy that ultimately introduced the world to Katseye.

For those unfamiliar, the show essentially takes K-pop methods of training their “idols” and puts girls through the ringer on their way to becoming part of the band. The intense training focuses on vocals, dancing, and the ultimate combination of doing both at the same time.

Over the weekend, bandmate Lara Rajagopalan took to the platform Weverse to make some confessions about her sexuality.

On the platform, which is meant to allow celebrities to interact with their fans, Rajagopalan said she knew she “was half fruitcake when I was like 8 so I really was wanting everybody.”

She also said she’d likely known before age 8, and also said, “isn’t half fruitcake such a good way to explain it without saying it”?

She further detailed that when the show aired, she was “really really scared” because she didn’t know if people would accept her or if it would impede her chances on getting in.

Fortunately, the fandom welcomed her, leaving her to say, “And then you were all so nice about it and gave me so much love and support and it made me feel so confident in who I am, so I love you for that.”

Her coming out also puts her in line as the first LGBTQ+ representation in the K-pop industry, where she joins J-pop artist Shinjiro Atae as the first to come out in their prospective industries.

After posting her coming out on Weverse, Rajagopalan released an audio clip talking about the challenges of being a girl who likes girls, either because people don’t think it’s a real thing or because they fetishize it.

All we know is, we stan behind this. Welcome to the fam, girl!
