She's come a long way!
Fans fell in love with Poppy when she first made her debut on YouTube many years ago. Since then, she's crafted her sound to represent who she truly is... and she even made history in the process.
As her fifth album Zig approaches its release, the singer is heading back out on tour to reconnect and perform with her new and OG fans.
Poppy recently caught up with PRIDE to talk all about her new music, hitting the road, and the love she has for her passionate supporters.
PRIDE: Congratulations on your return! Fans have been loving your new single "Knockoff." How incredible has it been for you to see such positive reception to your new song?
Poppy: It has been nice! I am glad that one is finally out and I am very pleased with the video. I had a very enjoyable experience making it.
This is the first single off your new album Zig, out in late October. How would you describe this new era to fans old and new?
Zig is my fifth album project. It’s a culmination of sounds and expressions I’ve wanted to combine for quite some time now and I am enjoying dance and swords at the moment.
Fans are literally counting down the days until this new record. What are they in store for when they get to hear it?
They can expect a record by Poppy. It’s not a linear record, but a timestamp of my life, which I believe (for myself) albums are supposed to be. I have always thought albums work as snapshots and a collection of lessons, cautionary tales, and letters to your past, present, and future self.
You have so many great songs on this album, but I have to know. Which is your favorite at the moment?
It depends on the day, really, and I am sure it will change as I play them on the road, because it always does. But for my selection right now, I’d say "The Attic" and "Prove It.
Your dark and heavy metal sound really comes alive in this new album. Why was it important for you to continue expressing yourself in this kind of genre?
Thank you. I am just leading by interest, and what I enjoy. I think those with a similar approach will find me.
You've broken boundaries with your sound and you even made history as the first-ever solo female artist nominated in the Best Metal Performance at the Grammys. How liberating does it feel to break typical norms and genres in the music industry?
It feels nice. I am appreciative that I was recognized by the committee in that way. For me, it is just about waking up every day and making things that I fancy. I don't often look outside to check in with what the current “norms” are. Last I checked, I was startled and I just wanted to turn off what I was seeing.
Your gay fans absolutely love you. What does it mean to you to have such loyal supporters from the LGBTQ+ community?
I love the LGBTQ+ community and from the beginning of my projects, I have always felt supported and accepted by them. The first few years of my projects, I’d perform at gay clubs in Los Angeles and I always felt like it was a safe space for me to be expressive. I owe a lot to them for giving me the confidence to sing in public, truly.
You're promoting your new music in the best way by heading out on tour. How thrilled are you to see your fans and perform again?
I am so very excited. It’s the first tour I’ve done this year, and it’s leading up to the release of the new record, so it’s going to be nice to be around my people again.
For someone who's never been, how would you describe a Poppy show?
Come alone or come with your friends. You are welcome here and wear your fanciest getup.
A lot of people have been supporting you since your early YouTube days. What words of gratitude would you like to share with your fans?
Thank you for coming along, and I send you my love and energy!
Zig drops October 27 and fans can get tickets to see Poppy on her website here.
